It’s over!

You might say, it’s not that dramatic, but my favorite brewery closed for good on December 22. And yes, I’m a bit sad because 1.) it was within walking distance, and 2.) it was the only brewery here that produced a really good Lager (yeah, I know, Canadians would want to challenge me on that, but if you put fruit or some other weird stuff into a Lager, it’s not a Lager anymore, it’s an IPA).

So, now you could say: what’s the big deal, just drink less alcohol, it’s healthier anyway. But the prospect of not having a nice beer garden anymore where I could have a drink, is not so great.

Studio Brewing is, by the way, not the only brewery that had to shut down – apparently dozens of Craft Breweries have been affected, because they all had to pay back their Covid loans. But that only partially explains Studio Brewing’s closure: It is also said that the brewery generally made too little profit. I don’t understand why there wasn’t a Gofundme or some subscription model (aren’t there some for breweries already?) launched or why they didn’t do something earlier in the summer to make more money. There wasn’t a single campaign to attract more people.

And since there aren’t that many breweries in the area, I’m sure some people would have donated a few dollars. Also Studio Brewing is located in an industrial area where not many people are passing by late at night – they could have started there or at least try some kind of advertizing. However, in summer when the weather was good – at least in the early evening – it was always very crowded and you had to fight for a seat. That’s why I don’t understand all of this.

But it’s already over now. Nothing you can do about it. I’m curious to see if the brewers will work somewhere else – I really hope, they won’t do something else, because they were really excellent in beer brewing.

The patio of Studio Brewing at dusk: the string lights and the brewery sign are lit up, plastic Halloween ghosts hang from the pavillon roof. The concrete pillars and tracks of the Skytrain can be seen in the background.
