It’s amazing how trusting some animals are: The neighbor’s gray-tiger tomcat now comes running up to us as soon as he sees us or hears our voices to be petted extensively. And he’s not the only one! Two streets away lives a couple of black cats who also show up when we pass by. There is no such thing as cat flaps in the doors here, people always open the doors or windows for the cats. The other day we were walking past the black cats‘ house and suddenly there was a „bang“! One of the cats had kicked out the fly screen of the second floor window with its paw … from there it can jump from the intermediate roof onto the lawn and finally onto the sidewalk.

The gray cat is part of a duo: We first met the female cat, who has since become a little more indifferent towards us, but we always wave to her when she sits on the stairs outside of the house. The funny thing is that a little boy lives in the house next door who suddenly started waving back at us. And a few days ago, he was standing in front of the house and waved at us with a beaming face. That was one of the cutest encounters I’ve ever had.
But back to the cats: Sometimes the gray cat even follows us to the front door. And that’s not all – if we’re not really careful, he’s in the house to inspect everything thoroughly. At first, he only dared to go downstairs and ran excitedly back and forth everywhere. The next time he got braver and ran up the stairs on his own. You have to explore everything! The problem is that he doesn’t want to leave anymore. And I don’t think the neighbors would like that. We had to carry him outside under protest and now we make sure – with a heavy heart – that he won’t be coming into our house.

In another residential area, we’ve also had an orange cat run up to us meowing and wanting to be petted. Now, we have to walk along all the streets where we know cats live. However, there are also a few dogs lying on the couch in the window, making a sad face. Of course, we have to wave to them, too. The other day we saw a very excited bobtail that had spotted a squirrel on the fence in front of the house, jumping up and down, barking and pawing the window. Those flying ears!
And we also got to know an elderly couple through the cats: they have an orange cat that likes to sunbathe in the window or in front of the house. But they also have a second white/colored cat who is a bit overweight and has problems walking. Her dad recently wheeled her back and forth in the wheelbarrow in the sun – it was really adorable and I was delighted to be able to watch it!
